Support to Fisheries

The project intends to provide support to fisherfolk (including boat and canoe builders) who have been significantly affected by Hurricane Maria. Provision is made to assist fishers in restoring their fishing capacity by:

  1. Providing support to obtain new boats or engines.
  2. Provision of support for canoe replacement.
  3. Provision of technical advisory services and training.

To be qualified for Boat, Canoe or Engine Replacement, the Fishers must:

  • Provide a current form of legal identification, (Fisher’s license, Social Security Card, Passport, and or Driver’s license)
  • Be registered with the Fisheries Division.
  • Be confirmed in the Fisheries Division Hurricane Maria damage and loss assessment database.
  • Have been listed as an18 ft or more boat owner before Hurricane Maria in the boat registry.
  • Not presently own a boat?

Provision of support to boat and canoe builders

  1. Provision of support for building climate resilient boat building facilities.
  2. Provision of boat building tools and equipment.
  3. Provision of technical advisory services and training.

Support to Fisher folk, boat and canoe builders

  1. Fishers will have the option of 50% of the value towards;
  2. FRP boat replacement to a maximum value of US$ 11,000.00
  3. Canoe replacement to a maximum value of US$ 4,500.00
  4. Engine replacement to a maximum of US$ 7,000.00
  5. Boat builders will receive up to 50% of cost towards boat building tools and equipment to a Maximum value (US$5,500.00).
  6. Technical training towards construction of FRP boats.

 Fisherfolk under the project will receive replacement of the following:

  • FRP Boat replacement: 21 ft with ice box
  • Traditional canoe replacement: > 18 ft
  • Engine replacement: 4 – stroke outboard motor, 50 or 100 horsepower
  • FRP Boat builders: boat building tools and equipment (PPE, tarpaulin)
